Afrojack

The stars must’ve been aligned just right when Nick van de Wall (also known as Afrojack) saw his first ray of light. Music was his first love since day one, although it didn’t manifest until his fifth year, when he started playing piano. Being a very creative student, Afrojack spent most of his time listening to all kinds of music while studying. To no surprise it didn’t take him long to turn the tables around and start to make music instead of just listening to it.
At the age of 11, Afrojack downloads a program called Fruity loops. At this point in time his talent and passion for creating music truly surfaces. Rapidly acquainting himself with and appreciating Fruity Loops, it becomes his program of choice, that he uses to this day. Afrojack finishes school and decides to proceed with his musical carrier. Not being able to make a living out of it yet, he starts to work part-time in bars and catering. Now he has more than enough time to discover the club scene in Rotterdam, starting with his first night out in the old club Las Palmas when he was only 16 years old. After this many clubnights followed, many side-jobs, many small DJ-gigs for the fun of deejaying and a lot of studio time.
In 2006 sets off to Crete (Greece) deejaying for five full months straight in every club that have will him, learning the craft and making his first ‘flight hours’. It was also in Crete where he made his first small hit, called “F*ck Detroit”. When returning home to the Netherlands, he’s still fired up and makes some more tracks, and is determined to get it out on a label, with a little help from Sidney Samson and Laidback Luke, Digidance decides to give it a shot, and it worked; “Afrojack – In Your Face” scored no. 60 in the Dutch top100 and no. 3 in the Dutch dance top30. Not to bad for the first release of an 18 year old kid.

In 2007 Nick starts performing under the name Afrojack, determined to proceed to the top as a DJ and producer. Track after track and remix after remix follow. Afrojack is rarely seen outside of his studio. When he’s not deejaying, he is producing and it starts to pay off. His tracks get played and massively supported by multiple genre international DJ’s like David Guetta, Josh Wink, Dave Clarke, Laidback Luke, Fedde Le Grand, Marco V, Richard Durand, and national like DJ’s Benny Rodrigues, Erick E, Roog, Sidney Samson. Just to name a few. In 2007 Afro starts his own record label, Wall Recordings (exclusively for Beatport and Juno). A whole bunch of quality releases soon follow (Don’t Be, Proper Introduction, Thief etc.) In 2008 he hits the clubs with “Math” and “Do My Dance” and again both tracks get picked up by every big name in the industry. Afro hooks up with Partysquad and a couple of weeks later, a “Drop down (do my dance)” co-op mix is born and hits the Dutch top 20, and gets crowned “Tune of the Week” by the biggest Dutch radio stations, and even the biggest Dutch music television network “TMF”. Afrojack’s breakthrough to the whole Dutch audience is now a fact.
Respected by his colleague DJ’s for his production talent and skills and loved by clubbers for his dancefloor bombs and energetic performances, Afrojack sets a new standard in the industry and is here to stay

Dj Richard Murray

The last 48 months have seen Richard criss-cross the globe on his DJ travels, while long sessions in the studio have yielded some serious results and Richard already has an impressive production portfolio to his name.

Born and raised in Carlisle in North West England, he quickly became immersed in the local club scene and cut his DJ teeth playing at most of the city’s venues. A move to Manchester to attend university followed and his love of DJing came with him with Richard seizing the opportunity to play at venues like Paradise Factory, Venus, Joshua Brooks and Club North.

Next stop London and a chance meeting with a record label boss proved the perfect catalyst for Richard to take his musical career to the next level. It was Matt Stuart, former label manager at Underwater Records, and then with the Ministry of Sound.

“We hit it off immediately as he was a northerner too,” remembers Richard, “and we ended up drinking and talking about music until five the next morning. After hearing me play at house party he held in his apartment, Matt offered me the chance to be involved with a new project the Ministry was launching – the Housexy compilation series.”

Richard quickly landed the role of UK resident for Housexy club dates before becoming a worldwide touring resident and compiling and mixing several Housexy compilations. He has mixed eight volumes to date, all double CDs, starting with ‘Housexy International’ in January 2007 and most recently ‘Housexy Summer’ in August 2009. His engineering skills have also been utilised on ‘The Underground’ triple CD collections put out by the Ministry of Sound with the 2010 edition released recently.

Originally coming onboard for Housexy, it wasn’t long before Richard came involved with the Ministry of Sound itself. He originally played at Rulin back in 2001 but then lost contact; Housexy opened the door again, however, and he joined Paul Farris for the first Housexy night at the club in London. With UK and international dates soon under his belt and a reputation for rockin’ dancefloors wherever he played, it wasn’t long before he was invited onboard the Ministry of Sound as an international resident.

Rather than ask where Richard has played, it’s more a case of where he hasn’t. We’re talking nearly every continent over the last couple of years with only Australia left to cross off the list. Russia has been a major territory where he has a strong reputation and most recently, South America with a successful tour of Brazil and an outstanding night at Pacha Buenos Aires playing the main set to over 3,000 people.

November 2009 also saw Richard blaze a trail in India, while headlining the Ministry of Sound closing party at the Aarhus Festival in Denmark in 2008 is another personal highlight. Boston, Vancouver, Milan and all over Europe as well as trips to Japan, China, South Africa, Dubai, Egypt and many more help complete the picture of just how busy Richard has been and how experienced a DJ he has become.

Experience and versatility are very much part of his DJ armoury and Richard spreads his net far wider than the Housexy sound which favours the funkier, vocal side of house. In fact, he has a passion for the tougher, tech house sound which is mirrored in his productions. Dark and driving with big breaks, there’s still a strong emphasis on funk-fuelled grooves and energy to move the dancefloor.

The other side of the equation is his productions and 2009 has been the year that Richard has really got into his stride. As well as his compilation work, Richard has released a string of singles on labels like Slip ‘n’ Slide, Suesse, SoulHeat, Chega and Loopfreaks, some in collaboration with Paul Deighton. Most important is Richard’s ongoing relationship with Matt Stuart who runs Gung Ho! Recordings.

Gung Ho! have become a well established and critically acclaimed label and Richard has been in the thick of things remixing artists like The Japanese Popstars, Burn The Negative and Zoo Brazil. He has released his own singles, ‘Cannibal’ and ‘Bat Attack’, as well as mixing the label compilation, ‘Kings of a Little Kingdom’. Perhaps the outstanding moment has been Richard’s ‘Lil Muz’ remix of Zoo Brazil’s ‘Technik’ which has come in for some serious praise.

Looking ahead and Richard has some exciting new productions ready to roll including the ‘Don’t Go’ collaboration with Paul Deighton forthcoming on Cr2 Records, a Richard Murray & Dodge reworking of classic Gypsy track, ‘I Trance You’, on Limbo Records, and Richard’s cheeky bootleg of The Bangles’ ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’. This is just for starters and there are several more singles lined up with the big tech house labels firmly in his sights. His own imprint is also on the agenda.

“I like big chunky, wobbly monsters with energy and big hands to the roof breaks,” enthuses Richards, “big reverbs and delays, cheeky vocals chipping in and out, and phat ass-shaking basslines. I’m a proper house head too so a solid well-produced house record does it for me just as much.”

A typical Richard Murray set will include the energy of tracks from the likes of Toolroom and the Swedish House Mafia but also the underground tech sounds of Olivier Giacomotto and Popof. He still loves to play on the funkier side too and you’ll be able to catch Richard playing at Ministry of Sound and Housexy parties worldwide throughout 2011.
